I just came across a website which lists small business opportunities every day. I encourage you to get on this blog and find ideas which will help you get established.

Look up www.business-opportunities.biz  This is daily blog with solid ideas. For example, a rowboat franchise is listed in today's blog.

If you live in Ontario and are starting a second career look at www.gov.on.ca  This is the Ontario government website. Click on business, then put second career at the top rght. This will give you all the details of this excellent program. They will help you up to $28,00 with expences. 

Probably other provinces and states have a similar programs. This could be a big help in getting you back into a positve cash flow position. 

Another opportunity that is self employment but in an oganization; that is being a waiter or waitress. As you know part of the earnings come as tips.

Here is a true story.

One of my grandaughters started when she was 16 years old in a middle of the road fast food restaurant. She was only allowed to clean up tables at first. She saw how the place worked, loved being with people and was smart.

You were probably brought up to believe that waiting on tables was a low job and a good way to work until you could get a real job.

Well, my grandaughter makes an average of $38 an hour in tips or $1530 a week. She is now saving to buy her first house. 

My wife and I have eaten in this restaurant and watched her. She seems to able to make people feel at home, almost as if they were in her home. 

She likes what she does and is very competent. A good way to earn a living.  

So here are some excellent ideas about developing your home-based business

The number of self-employed inceased by 18% between 2001 and 2006. By 2008 there will be 2.8 million self-employed Canadians. 

These numbers are similar in the USA.

Rick Spence says there has never been a better time to start a business.

The future of business is now being decided in basements and spare bedrooms all over the world  

According to the RBC 20% of Canadians are considering starting a home-based business in the next five years.

The US Small Business Association ranked Canada second after Denmark in entrepreneurialism and America in third spot.

So what is your big idea?  

Self employment or a home-based business is very important, especially in these times of high unemployment and economic uncertainty.

Scroll down and I will tell you about home-based businesses that I know about. I just added more money-making programs.

First let me talk abour home-based businees or self-employment.

Some peorple use the word bi-vocational. These are people, often working with low salary or working as a volunteer for a charity or misson organization and have a home-based business to earn an income.

As many of you know you never know when you are going to be terminated or "packaged out" to use the latest expression. I have had this experience twice and I know the empty feeling you can have.

This applies also to people who have been retired. If you have adequate resources work as a volunteer. If not start a home-based business.

If you have a full-time job, start a home-based business. As I said before you never know when your current job will end. Your home-based business will help carry you through until you get a new job or decide to work at home.

It is like an insurance policy;you never know when you will need it.

You may also find that you able to really concentrate on it and it becomes a full-time job. Many people I have read about were able to do that and are now earning a lot more than they did before and with a lot less hassle.

For example, I read about a woman who was a real estate broker and worked long hours. She was always interested in photography and started a photography business taking family and stock photographs. In addition she give workshops in Lightroom. She now earns more money doing what she loves doing, with shorter hours and less hassle. 

It is vital that you have a second income.

Another reason is that a second income has tax benefits.

Let's say for example you are interested in travel and you read about travel writing courses. So you buy one and discover you can pay for your vacation by writing about it. You also discover you can increase your income by adding photographs.

Also, all or part of your travel expences can be written off against your income.

I have two resources listed below about travel writing and photography.

Many people have several sources of income; if one is seasonal the others will compensate. For example, if you are in the gardening business you could combine that with snowplowing in the winter.

First, make sure you have adequate resources. The programs I have listed require a computer and internet access. You probably have that now.

Second, make a business plan

Write down your yearly goal or goals.

Decide what you are going to do this week.

Decide what you are going to do today.

In this way you have broken down your major goal into small manageable bits.

Third, this is a business your are starting, not a hobby. You may be turning your hobby into a business which will require a change in your thinking.

Fourth, you need patience, plan for the long term of at least five years.

Fifth, you need a saleable service or product.

Finally, do not leave your regular job until you have replaced your income. If you are unemployed do anything to keep your financial head above water and at the same time work on your home-based business.
